Part two: Through the woods
Setnoise: rain on trees, steps in mud?
Grenades whizz over from the south… XXX corps!
Our own guns shooting overhead barely clearing us and into the German lines. My ears are ringing from the heavy pounding… Utter carnage!
Pssst, grab the line.
My hands find the ribbon, don‘t let go… Never let go, dont ever let go, keep walking. This white ribbon is my life-line…
Bullets ricochet off the trees. A German machine gun spits bullets…
Good God, so close… they‘re so close? Is that their voices?
set noise: bullets whizzing, bullets hitting
Duck! The man behind me takes a dive
I immediately follow him…
“Get on,” hisses someone I can‘t see.
I stand up, the white ribbon,…wheres the ribbon?
“Come on,” I whisper,… but the man behind me remains motionless, his face in the mud… dead.
The ribbon guides us through the trees… I cant feel anything,… only my heartbeating, my chattering jaws,… my fear, my life…
As long as I‘m afraid theres life… and I live…
Everything‘s so noisy, wet clothes,… raindrops on my helmet… everything is a betrayal.
To our right, passing a pond… flames from a farm, .. a beacon.
setnoise: rain, grenades in water
Grenades hit…
We crouch between the trees… my heart stops…
Have we been discovered?
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me
Abide with me, abide with me
